The Instructor Training Course |
SSI Training - what ever diver should know
Each of our Dive Leader Training Programs is based on SSI's Diver Diamond
methodology, which focuses on the proper knowledge, skills, equipment, and
experience required in helping you become a highly qualified instructor.
Proper
Knowledge. SSI's Dive Leader Training Programs will help you acquire
the knowledge to help new divers become confident and comfortable underwater.
Proper Skills. During SSI's Dive Leader Training, you will
learn from an experienced instructor who will teach and mentor you. Their
goal is to make sure you are a comfortable and confident teacher.
Proper Equipment. You will learn the specific equipment
requirements for your dive store. This information will help in teaching your
students about the importance of owning their own diving equipment, as well
as selling them Total Diving Systems.
Proper Experience. Your Instructor Certifier, Neil, has a wealth of experience
to share with you that would take years to learn on your own
Become a valuable employee as an SSI Instructor
Most instructor programs
focus only on teaching diving. However, most dive businesses require
much more of instructors than merely teaching.
The SSI Instructor Training
Course (ITC) prepares you to become an active member of the scuba industry,
a successful educator and a valuable dive business employee.
Your training includes:
- Techniques for recruiting, teaching and evaluating students
- The SSI Education System and Education Philosophy
- How dive industry stakeholders interact (manufacturers, media, agencies,
retail and travel)
- How successful dive retailers and resorts operate
- Effective techniques for teaching in the pool and open water
- Legal aspects of teaching
- The basics of educational sales using SSI's Customer Loyalty Cycle
Why SSI Instructors are More Marketable
- SSI Instructors possess business knowledge that instructors from other
agencies don't. The expanded course content of the SSI ITC gives you an edge
over "teaching only" programs and makes you a much more valuable, well-rounded
employee.
- SSI Instructors represent the best of both worlds. You are trained to
use the award-winning SSI Teaching System and you are trained to be a skilled
educator.
- SSI Instructors are able to conduct the Universal Referral Program. This
program allows you to complete referral dives through six different agencies:
IDEA, NASDS, NAUI, PDIC, SSI and the YMCA. This is particularly valuable
to resorts that receive customers affiliated with various certification agencies.
What Else Can You Teach?
- Scuba Skills Update
- Resort Diver Program
- Scuba Diver Program
- Open Water Diver Course
- Advanced Adventurer Program
- Diver Stress & Rescue Course (after completing the Diver Stress & Rescue
seminar)
- Scuba Rangers (after completing the Scuba Rangers Instructor training)
SSI Authorized Scuba Schools and the New Instructor.
As a new Instructor, your first few classes can be a little intimidating.
When you work for an SSI Authorized Scuba School, you are teaching in an established
scuba school with experienced instructors. They can assist with your
first few courses and they have a wealth of knowledge to help you progress.

The SSI Instructor Training Course (ITC) is designed to make you a competent
and confident diving instructor; able to conduct academic sessions efficiently,
supplementing students' knowledge to maximise retention, and optimise time
spent in the water, so you can effectively teach and evaluate your students'
skills and abilities.
The Instructor Training Process
The steps in the SSI Instructor training Course & Open Water Evaluation processes
1). The ITC is relaxed and fun, but for best results, requires some preparation which you can do by home study - this way you'll be well prepared before the course so you can enjoy yourself during the course.
2). The eight to ten day Instructor Training Course consists of academic sessions, practice presentations, workshops and mini exams, all designed to help you develop your teaching ability in the classroom and water, as well as develop your business knowledge and skills.
We want you, not only to pass your IE, but to be comfortable and confident
in your abilities to teach afterwards, that's why we will spend
as much time with you as you need during your ITC
to make sure you're fully prepared for what's ahead
as an SSI Open Water Instructor.
3). To help you become a more well-rounded instructor, we'll spend ample time teaching you how to conduct the Stress & Rescue Programme.
4). Once approved in a performance review, candidates can can move on to the Evaluation. Candidates who are not yet ready to be evaluated may act as an Associate Instructor, practising their teaching under supervision before going on to the Evaluation.
5). During your Instructor Evaluation (IE), you are given a final academic exam and your teaching presentations are graded by an independent Instructor Certifier. Although SSI is big, you'll be pleased to know that our group sizes are small. There will be a maximum of 6 candidates on your IE, ensuring that your Instructor Certifier will not rush you and will be able to evaluate your abilities thoroughly.
6). The evaluation process
ends with a final performance review where successful
candidates are awarded the rating Open Water Instructor. If candidates
are not ready to be OWI's, they may remain Associate
Instructors, and continue to practise teaching until
re-evaluation.
7). The orientation is conducted at the SSI Dealership. It is designed to make you familiar with a particular Dealership, its policies, facilities and services, and may include in-depth sales training.
Prerequisites
To be eligible for an Instructor Training Course, you must be an SSI Dive
Control Specialist or equivalent from another agency
with at least 6 months since your first diving certification,
